The Multiverse Branches

When Loki escaped with the Tesseract in 2012. When Doctor Strange cast an unsecured spell. When the Watcher started answering "What if...?" — the single sacred timeline became many.

The Sacred Timeline
The single prime reality the Time Variance Authority monitored and protected. All 33 main MCU films (until Loki Season 1 Episode 5) occur on this timeline. Everything in the horizontal track above happens here.
Prime Reality · Earth-616
The Loki Tesseract Branch
Created in 2012 during the Avengers' time heist. Captured Loki grabs the Tesseract and vanishes, splintering off a new branch where Loki lands in the Gobi desert. This branch is the entire setting of the Disney+ Loki series and leads directly to He Who Remains and the reveal of Kang.

Spider-Verse Convergence
Doctor Strange's botched memory spell in No Way Home tears open the multiverse — pulling in every person who knows Peter Parker across realities. Results in three Spider-Men meeting, five classic villains crossing over, and Peter-1's existence being erased from the MCU.

The What If…? Realities
Observed (and occasionally intervened in) by Uatu the Watcher. Includes: Captain Carter's universe where Peggy gets the super-soldier serum; Zombie Avengers; Killmonger killing Tony Stark in the desert; Doctor Strange becoming Strange Supreme. Many of these realities get referenced directly in Multiverse of Madness and Deadpool & Wolverine.

The 838 Illuminati Reality
Seen in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Home of an Illuminati that includes Captain Carter, Captain Marvel (Maria Rambeau), Mr. Fantastic (John Krasinski), Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and a Strange killed by Wanda. America Chavez escapes this universe with Doctor Strange-616.

Timeline-199999 (MCU Retcon)
Before Marvel officially adopted "616" as the MCU's designation, various cross-media materials listed the main MCU as Earth-199999. In Multiverse of Madness, Mordo says "I'm giving you a tour of Earth-838" implying ours is 616. But 199999 remains referenced in older tie-in content — a lingering canon contradiction the Russos once confirmed and Marvel Studios later overrode.

🕷️ Three Peters, One Multiverse

Doctor Strange's spell pulled in everyone from every universe who knew Peter Parker's identity. The three Spider-Men who met in No Way Home each came from a distinct reality — each had already lost someone.

Tobey Maguire
Peter-2
Earth-96283
The original. Lost Uncle Ben to the burglar he failed to stop. Lost Harry Osborn after the Green Goblin. Older, wiser, still with MJ.
Andrew Garfield
Peter-3
Earth-120703
The Amazing one. Lost Uncle Ben and then Gwen Stacy — unable to save her from Electro's fall. Carried that guilt until NWH gave him a second chance to save MJ.
Tom Holland
Peter-1
Earth-616 (MCU)
The MCU Peter. Loses Aunt May in this film. At the end, chooses to complete the spell — erasing himself from everyone's memory, including MJ and Ned.

🌳 Key Branching Events

The precise moments when the timeline splintered.

2012Stark Tower
Avengers: Endgame
Loki Steals the Tesseract

During the Battle of New York revisit, the time heist goes wrong. Captured Loki grabs the dropped Tesseract and vanishes — creating the Loki branch that drives the entire Disney+ series and introduces Kang the Conqueror through He Who Remains.

2014Vormir
Avengers: Endgame
Nebula's Neural Sync

Past-Nebula's synchronized memory alerts 2014-Thanos to the entire plan. He captures present-Nebula and dispatches his forces forward to destroy Earth. The consequence of this action only hits the Sacred Timeline, not a branch.

2024End of Time
Loki Season 1 Finale
He Who Remains Dies

Sylvie kills He Who Remains at the end of time. His death removes the being who had been pruning every branching timeline for thousands of years. The Sacred Timeline instantly fractures into infinite Multiversal branches — this is the moment the full Multiverse Saga officially begins.

2024Sanctum Sanctorum
Spider-Man: No Way Home
Strange's Memory Spell Fails

Peter's repeated interruptions during the spell to make the world forget his identity cause it to crack open and pull in every villain and every Peter Parker from adjacent realities. The ultimate result — Peter rewrites the spell to erase himself entirely. The MCU loses its Spider-Man connection to all prior films.

2024Earth-838
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Wanda's Dreamwalking

A Scarlet Witch-corrupted Wanda possesses her 838-variant's body to reach her dream children. The Illuminati are killed. This is the first time the MCU explicitly shows an alternate reality with recast characters (John Krasinski's Reed Richards, Patrick Stewart's Professor X) — establishing the multiverse is cinematically real.

2025Quantum Realm
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
Kang Variant #1 Dies

Scott defeats one Kang variant in the Quantum Realm. A post-credits scene reveals that the Council of Kangs — thousands of Kang variants from across the multiverse — are now mobilizing against the Sacred Timeline. This sets up the Avengers: The Kang Dynasty conflict.
