CHARACTER PROFILE
Thor
Marvel's adaptation of Norse mythology — and Chris Hemsworth's 13-year cinematic run across four solo films and four Avengers ensembles.
Character history & cinematic adaptations
Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby adapted Thor from Norse mythology in Journey into Mystery #83 (August 1962). The early Lee-Kirby run established the Asgardian cosmology that has anchored Thor's identity ever since — Odin's reign, the Bifröst rainbow bridge, Loki's trickster opposition, Jane Foster's Earth-bound romance. Walter Simonson's celebrated 1980s run modernized the character into Marvel's most ambitious cosmic-fantasy property.
Chris Hemsworth has played Thor across the MCU since Thor (2011). His eight-film run encompasses: Thor (2011) directed by Kenneth Branagh, The Avengers (2012), Thor: The Dark World (2013) directed by Alan Taylor, Age of Ultron (2015), Thor: Ragnarok (2017) — Taika Waititi's tonal reinvention, Infinity War (2018), Endgame (2019), and Thor: Love and Thunder (2022).
Thor: Ragnarok (2017) is widely cited as the MCU's most successful single-film tonal reset. Taika Waititi's deadpan-comedy direction, Mark Mothersbaugh's electronic score, Jeff Goldblum's Grandmaster, and the explicit Jack Kirby visual influence transformed the franchise from earnest Asgardian-mythic to neon-soaked cosmic comedy. The film grossed $854 million globally and is largely credited with saving the Thor franchise after the muted Dark World reception.
Hemsworth is confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday (2026) as part of the broader Phase 6 ensemble. For broader MCU context, see our MCU hub, release-order guide, and Phase 6 roadmap.
