Matt Reeves established his directorial voice across the rebooted Planet of the Apes trilogy — Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) and War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) — which brought motion-capture-driven prestige drama to a franchise that had previously been pure summer-tentpole material. The Apes films grossed a combined $1.4 billion globally and earned widespread acclaim for character-driven storytelling, particularly Andy Serkis's Caesar performance.
Reeves's transition to The Batman (2022) brought that same character-driven prestige approach to comic-book cinema. The 2022 film — Robert Pattinson's debut as Bruce Wayne, Paul Dano's Riddler, Colin Farrell's heavily-prosthetic Oz Cobb — landed as a deliberately noir, three-hour, deliberately-paced detective film rather than a conventional superhero blockbuster. It grossed $772 million globally and earned three Academy Award nominations.
Reeves's Batman exists in its own Elseworlds continuity — separate from both the original DCEU (Ben Affleck era) and James Gunn's rebooted DCU. The HBO spinoff series The Penguin (2024), executive-produced by Reeves, deepened the Batman universe's TV presence and led to an Emmy win for Cristin Milioti.
The Batman Part II is in active production for an October 1, 2027 release. Recent casting reveals include Sebastian Stan as Harvey Dent, Scarlett Johansson as Gilda Dent, and Charles Dance as Christopher Dent — establishing the Dent family as the sequel's dramatic spine.
