X-Men Timeline

Two decades of mutant cinema laid out in chronological order — from the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 to Logan's desolate 2029, through Days of Future Past's timeline-shattering reset, all the way to Deadpool & Wolverine's collision with the MCU.

📽️ The Fox-Era Chronology

The X-Men films span 24 years (2000–2024) and nearly 70 years of in-story history. Multiple timelines, time travel, and a soft reset via Days of Future Past — this chronology follows the in-story order as the films themselves establish it.

The Timelines Explained

The X-Men franchise contains some of the most tangled canon in comic book cinema. Days of Future Past soft-rebooted one timeline into another, Logan exists in its own continuity, and Deadpool & Wolverine tore the walls down completely.

📅
The Original Timeline (Pre-DoFP)
The events of X-Men (2000), X2 (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), and The Wolverine (2013) all occur here. In this timeline, Jean dies to save the team, Cyclops and the Professor die, Sentinels rise, and the X-Men are nearly wiped out — leading to the dystopian 2023 future shown in Days of Future Past.

The New Timeline (Post-DoFP)
Wolverine is sent back to 1973 to prevent Mystique from killing Trask. His success rewrites history. Jean lives. Cyclops lives. Xavier is alive in 2023. This new timeline continues through Apocalypse (1983) and Dark Phoenix (1992). This is the canonical timeline going forward — the original is technically erased.

The Dystopian Future (Erased)
The 2023 "bad future" seen at the start of Days of Future Past. Sentinels hunt and exterminate mutants and any human who carries the mutant gene. Storm, Iceman, Colossus, Kitty Pryde and a small resistance fight to the death. When Wolverine succeeds in his past mission, this entire timeline is erased.
Erased · DoFP Paradox
🗡️
The Logan Timeline (2029)
Set in 2029, 14 years after the last mutant was born. No new mutants have been born in 25 years. Most X-Men are dead — implied killed by a deteriorating Professor X's psychic seizure. Logan is slowly dying from adamantium poisoning. Meets his cloned daughter X-23/Laura. Logan dies. Considered canonically separate from the main timeline.

Earth-10005 / The Deadpool Universe
The Deadpool films retroactively place themselves within the X-Men film continuity. Deadpool 2 includes Colossus, Negasonic, Quicksilver. Deadpool 2's post-credits scene actually time-travels back to erase X-Men Origins: Wolverine from canon. Deadpool 3 / Deadpool & Wolverine officially connects this timeline to the MCU.

The Void / MCU Crossover
In Deadpool & Wolverine, the TVA identifies the Fox-X-Men universe as an "Anchor Being" reality being destroyed because Logan died. Wade and Wolverine travel to the Void — where pruned realities are dumped — and meet Johnny Storm, Gambit, Elektra, Blade, and X-23. Their universe is saved. The MCU's multiverse now officially contains the Fox X-Men history.

🔪 Two Wolverines, One Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman played Wolverine for 24 years across 10 films — retired after Logan's tragic death in 2017. Then came back one more time for Deadpool & Wolverine. These are the three most important versions of the character he portrayed.

2000–2013 Logan
Classic Wolverine
Original Timeline
The brooding, reluctant X-Man. Blue-and-gold costume teased in Origins; otherwise wears the black leather team suit. Suffers memory loss, the Weapon X program, and loss of Jean Grey. Dies in The Wolverine's original ending plans before being rewritten.
Logan (2017)
The Old Man
2029 · Logan Timeline
Grey-bearded, scarred, dying of adamantium poisoning. The final performance — a neo-western elegy. Logan finally dies saving Laura (X-23) and the next generation of mutants. Hugh Jackman swore this was his last time as the character.
2024 Variant
Yellow-Cowl Wolverine
Earth-10005 (D&W)
A variant from a reality where he failed his X-Men. Finally puts on the iconic yellow-and-blue comic-accurate costume for the first time in film history. Teams with Deadpool to save their timeline. Jackman's actual final (probably) Wolverine performance.

Wolverine Dies

Logan dies in Laura's arms after saving her and the young mutants. She inverts his cross grave marker into an "X". The closing shot of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in the original Fox continuity — a genuinely tragic, beautiful western-flavoured farewell.

Deadpool Erases X-Men Origins
