Iron Man
Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist — the architect of the MCU's first decade.
Character history & cinematic adaptations
Created in 1963 by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, Don Heck, and Jack Kirby as a deliberate inversion of the era's expectations — making readers love a wealthy industrialist during the Cold War — Tony Stark / Iron Man has become Marvel Comics' most commercially significant character of the 21st century, almost entirely because of Robert Downey Jr.'s 2008-2024 portrayal.
Iron Man (2008) is the founding text of modern comic-book cinema. Jon Favreau's film launched Marvel Studios as an independent production company, established the MCU's continuity-driven storytelling model, and proved Downey could carry a $140M tentpole after a decade of personal struggles. Downey reprised the role in Iron Man 2 (2010), The Avengers (2012), Iron Man 3 (2013), Age of Ultron (2015), Civil War (2016), Homecoming (2017), Infinity War (2018), and his definitive farewell in Avengers: Endgame (2019).
Downey's return as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday (December 2026) represents one of cinema's most-anticipated character pivots — the actor who defined Iron Man for sixteen years returning to the MCU as Doom, the closest comic-book equivalent to a moral inversion. The casting was announced at Marvel Studios' SDCC 2024 panel and is the centerpiece of Marvel's Phase 6 marketing.
Iron Man's source material is one of the most-adapted in modern comic-book cinema. Warren Ellis's Iron Man: Extremis (2005) directly inspired both Iron Man 3 and influenced the broader MCU's nanotech aesthetic. Matt Fraction's Invincible Iron Man run informs much of the post-Endgame character development. For complete coverage, see our MCU hub and release-order guide.
