Created by Roy Thomas, Len Wein, and John Romita Sr. in The Incredible Hulk #180-181 (October-November 1974), Wolverine debuted as a minor antagonist in another character's book — a short Canadian government agent with claws. He became Marvel's most popular character within a decade. Chris Claremont's Uncanny X-Men run reframed him as the X-Men's anti-hero conscience, and Frank Miller's 1982 solo miniseries established the samurai-loner identity that has defined the character ever since.

Hugh Jackman's 2000 casting in Bryan Singer's X-Men is the most-adapted single role in modern comic-book cinema. Jackman played Logan across eleven theatrical films and 24 years — the longest continuous single-actor superhero run in screen history. Films: X-Men (2000), X2 (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), X-Men Origins (2009), The Wolverine (2013), Days of Future Past (2014), Apocalypse (2016) (cameo), Logan (2017) — Jackman's intended farewell — and finally Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), his unexpected MCU return.

Jackman's Logan (2017) remains the definitive performance — a near-future western about an aging Wolverine protecting Dafne Keen's X-23, directed by James Mangold. The film won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay (well, was nominated; Get Out won) and is widely considered the greatest comic-book film of the 2010s. Industry reporting indicates Jackman will continue appearing in MCU projects beyond Avengers: Secret Wars (2027), though the eventual X-Men reboot will recast the role with a younger actor (likely Dafne Keen's X-23 as a successor character).
