We open in Detroit. Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) — a young rock musician — and his fiancée Shelly Webster are brutally murdered the night before their Halloween wedding. The killers — a gang of four led by T-Bird (David Patrick Kelly) — torture and kill the couple in their apartment. Eric is shot and thrown out a third-floor window; Shelly is raped and beaten to death.
Cut to: one year later. Eric's grave opens at midnight. A black crow lands on the grave. Eric emerges from the earth — resurrected by the crow as a cosmic vengeance-spirit. He has been brought back to right the wrongs of his murder. He has the supernatural abilities of regeneration, supernatural strength, and the ability to commune with the crow telepathically.
Eric, in white face-paint and a black leather outfit (inspired by both Brandon Lee's father Bruce Lee and the comic-book character), begins his vengeance against the four killers. He systematically hunts each of them across Detroit's underground criminal scene.
Eric kills T-Bird first by trapping him in an explosive electrical wire. He kills Tin Tin second by stabbing him with multiple knives in a martial-arts confrontation. He kills Funboy third by injecting him with his own heroin overdose. He kills Top Dollar (Michael Wincott) — the gang's leader — last in a rooftop confrontation.
Top Dollar — Detroit's drug-running mob boss who controls the gang — engages Eric in single combat at his rooftop headquarters during a Halloween night. Top Dollar reveals that he was the architect of Eric and Shelly's murder. They fight on the rooftop.
Eric defeats Top Dollar by pulling out his crow's bone-feather and stabbing him with it. Top Dollar dies. Eric reunites with the crow. He returns to his grave and finally allows himself to die — completing the resurrection mission. The crow flies away into the Detroit night.
The Crow grossed $94 million globally on a $23 million budget — strong commercial success. Brandon Lee's death made the film a cultural moment.
