Minnal Murali's 2021 Malayalam superhero film became one of India's most beloved comic-book entries despite being a Netflix original. Director Basil Joseph and lead Tovino Thomas have now confirmed that Minnal Murali 2 is in development — but only as a theatrical-first project, with rumored pan-India distribution.

When Minnal Murali (2021) dropped on Netflix in December 2021, it became one of the most over-performing superhero films of the streaming era — a small-budget Malayalam-language story about a tailor who develops electrical powers, hand-crafted by director Basil Joseph and lead Tovino Thomas with the seriousness of a Marvel feature on a fraction of the budget. The film became Netflix India's most-watched Malayalam film and earned cult status that has only grown over the four years since.

The sequel question has lingered since release. In recent interviews with Pinkvilla and The Hollywood Reporter India, Tovino Thomas confirmed that Minnal Murali 2 will happen — and crucially, will be theatrical-first. "If it's not theatrical, me and Basil won't be associating," Thomas told Pinkvilla, explicitly drawing a line under the Netflix-exclusive model that defined the original.

The theatrical-first commitment is significant for Malayalam cinema. The original Minnal Murali demonstrated that a small-budget, Malayalam-language superhero story could compete commercially with international superhero output when given the right marketing platform — but only on streaming. A theatrical release pushes the franchise into direct competition with Hindi-language films and pan-India tentpoles, raising both the commercial ambition and the risk profile considerably.

Director Basil Joseph has been cautious about the timeline. In recent comments he confirmed the project is in "discussion and planning stages" while he focuses on another unnamed project rumored to involve Allu Arjun (the Telugu/Hindi superstar best known from the Pushpa franchise). The Joseph–Arjun collaboration, if confirmed, would likely be a separate film — but the trade reporting suggests Joseph's career is moving toward larger pan-India productions, which positions Minnal Murali 2 for similar scale.

The lead actor and director are currently collaborating on Athiradi, a separate project directed by Arun Anirudhan with a May 2026 release. After that wraps, the runway opens for serious Minnal Murali 2 development. Thomas joked the sequel "might come when I'm at retirement age" — but trade insiders read this as standard Malayalam-film-industry caution rather than genuine doubt.
