CHARACTER PROFILE
Batman
The Dark Knight of Gotham City — the most-adapted superhero in cinema history.
Character history & cinematic adaptations
Created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger for Detective Comics #27 in May 1939, Batman emerged as DC Comics' answer to Superman — not a god-like outsider but a human shaped by trauma, intellect, and obsessive discipline. The character's foundational mythology — the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne, the years of training around the world, the discovery of the cave beneath Wayne Manor, the bat-as-symbol — was established within the first three years of publication and has remained remarkably stable across more than 85 years of stories.
Eight actors have played Batman in major live-action theatrical and television productions: Adam West (1966 series/film), Michael Keaton (Batman 1989, Batman Returns 1992, plus The Flash 2023 cameo), Val Kilmer (Batman Forever 1995), George Clooney (Batman & Robin 1997), Christian Bale (Nolan trilogy: Begins 2005, The Dark Knight 2008, Rises 2012), Ben Affleck (DCEU: BvS 2016, Justice League 2017, Snyder Cut 2021, The Flash 2023), Robert Pattinson (The Batman 2022, sequel 2027), and an unnamed actor anchoring the new DCU's The Brave and the Bold.
The character's screen identity has cycled through distinct interpretations every 10-15 years. Burton's gothic 1989 take rebooted the entire genre's commercial possibilities. Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy (2005-2012) brought prestige-cinema seriousness to comic-book adaptation. Reeves's The Batman (2022) restored noir-detective fundamentals after the DCEU's ensemble fatigue. James Gunn's rebooted DCU will introduce a new Batman (uncast as of writing) anchored in the Bat-Family mythology, including his biological son Damian Wayne — a Grant Morrison-era addition that has never appeared in live-action.
