⚠️ Heavy spoilers ahead. Forget what you've been told about superhero films being a Hollywood invention. Mr. India (1987) is one of Bollywood's most-iconic superhero films — Anil Kapoor's invisible-hero character became a cultural touchstone. Mogambo's catchphrase 'Mogambo khush hua' became Bollywood's most-quoted line. Heavy spoilers ahead.

We open in Mumbai (then Bombay). Arun Verma (Anil Kapoor) — a kind-hearted but poor musician — runs an orphanage caring for ten street children. The orphanage is at risk of being demolished by mob extortion and corrupt land development.

Arun receives a letter from his deceased father — a scientist who was killed years ago. The letter reveals that his father invented a wristwatch that grants invisibility. The watch has been hidden in Arun's home. Arun finds it.

Arun discovers the watch's power: by pressing a button, he becomes invisible. He uses it initially for petty mischief but quickly applies it to fight the corrupt criminal organization that has been extorting his neighborhood. He becomes known as Mr. India — the invisible Indian.

Mogambo (Amrish Puri) — the head of the criminal organization — has been planning to use his terrorist forces to overthrow the Indian government. He has been kidnapping young Indians for his henchmen. He intends to install himself as dictator.

Arun, as Mr. India, infiltrates Mogambo's headquarters. He uses his invisibility for reconnaissance and sabotage. He befriends Seema (Sridevi), a journalist whom Mogambo has been pursuing. Their relationship becomes the film's emotional center.

The final battle is at Mogambo's island headquarters. Arun fights through Mogambo's army. He defeats Mogambo's nuclear-arsenal-arming plan. Mogambo is killed in the final confrontation.

Mr. India was a major commercial success in 1987 India and remains widely cited as Bollywood's first definitive superhero film. The character of Mr. India has been referenced in countless subsequent Bollywood films. The film established the template that Krrish (2006) and Brahmastra (2022) would later expand.
