All six Marvel Cinematic Universe phases ranked from best to worst, based on aggregate Rotten Tomatoes scores, cultural impact, and franchise-defining moments. Updated June 2026 to include Phase 5 finales and Phase 6's in-progress films.
Phase 6 (2025-2027) — In progress · Phase 6 ranking provisional until Secret Wars releases
RANK #1
Phase 3 (2016-2019)
88% avg Rotten Tomatoes
76 avg Metacritic
11 films · Captain America: Civil War → Spider-Man: Far From Home
Standouts: Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Black Panther (2018), Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Phase 3 is the consensus highest-rated phase of the MCU. It concluded the 11-year Infinity Saga with two of the highest-grossing films of all time, introduced franchise-defining characters (T'Challa, Doctor Strange, Mantis, Carol Danvers, Scott Lang's daughter Cassie), and stuck a triple-feature finale — Ragnarok, Infinity War, Endgame — that no superhero film phase has matched before or since. Marvel's confidence at this point was at its peak; every film in the phase has an aggregate score above 80% RT.
Standouts: Iron Man (2008), Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), The Avengers (2012)
Phase 1 doesn't have the highest individual peaks, but it's the most influential phase ever made in cinema. It invented the cinematic-universe model. Every superhero film made since 2008 — DC, Sony Spider-Verse, Universal Monsters' attempts, even Hasbro's Cinematic Universe — is following the template Marvel built here. Iron Man's RDJ-resurrection casting decision alone is one of the boldest creative gambles in modern Hollywood, and The Avengers' culmination is still the gold standard for franchise crossover events.
The Avengers (2012)— First major team-up; Joss Whedon's franchise-defining ensemble
RANK #3
Phase 5 (2023-2025)
74% avg Rotten Tomatoes
62 avg Metacritic
7 films · Ant-Man Quantumania → Thunderbolts
Standouts: Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), Thunderbolts* (2025), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)
Phase 5 is the comeback phase. After the substantial dip of Phase 4, Marvel course-corrected — Deadpool & Wolverine became the highest-grossing R-rated film ever ($1.34B), Thunderbolts* successfully launched the post-Endgame Avengers replacement team, and GotG Vol. 3 closed the Guardians trilogy with one of the franchise's most emotional finales. The phase isn't without misses (Quantumania, The Marvels), but the highs are genuinely high.
Standouts: Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
Phase 2 is where the MCU established that it could produce different kinds of superhero films within one universe. Winter Soldier proved political thrillers worked in the genre; Guardians of the Galaxy proved cosmic space-opera worked. These two films alone moved the MCU from 'good action films' to 'genre-flexible franchise.' The phase's weakness is Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World, which marked the franchise's first creative stumbles, but the highs (Winter Soldier, GotG) are franchise-defining.
Ant-Man (2015)— Edgar Wright's departure cost the film its original vision
RANK #5
Phase 4 (2021-2022)
75% avg Rotten Tomatoes
63 avg Metacritic
7 films · Black Widow → Wakanda Forever
Standouts: Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)
Phase 4 was the post-Endgame transition phase, and it's the MCU's most uneven. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted production schedules; Disney+ series launched alongside theatrical films creating viewer fatigue; and the absence of a clear villain arc (no Thanos analog) made the phase feel directionless. No Way Home's multiverse-trilogy ending is genuinely great, and Wakanda Forever's response to Chadwick Boseman's death was emotionally substantive, but Eternals and Thor: Love and Thunder are widely regarded as the franchise's weakest entries.
5 confirmed films · The Fantastic Four → Avengers: Secret Wars
Standouts: To be determined — Avengers: Doomsday (Dec 2026), Avengers: Secret Wars (May 2027)
Phase 6 is in progress. As of June 2026, only First Steps has released; the phase ends with Avengers: Secret Wars in May 2027. The phase is being built around Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom — Marvel's most ambitious villain-recasting in the franchise's history. Until Doomsday and Secret Wars release, ranking Phase 6 against the others is provisional. Industry tracking suggests Doomsday will be the largest December opening in cinema history; if Marvel delivers on the trailer's promise, Phase 6 could ultimately rank #1 or #2.
Phase 3 (2016-2019) is widely considered the best MCU phase, averaging 88% Rotten Tomatoes across 11 films and including Infinity War, Endgame, Black Panther, and Ragnarok.
How many MCU phases are there?
Six phases as of June 2026. Phases 1-3 (2008-2019) form the Infinity Saga; Phases 4-6 (2021-2027) form the Multiverse Saga, ending with Avengers: Secret Wars in May 2027.
What is the worst MCU phase?
Phase 4 (2021-2022) is the most-criticized — uneven post-Endgame transition affected by COVID-19 disruption. Eternals and Thor: Love and Thunder are widely cited as the franchise's weakest films, though No Way Home (Phase 4) remains one of the most-successful releases.
Which MCU phase has the best Avengers movie?
Phase 3 has both Infinity War (85% RT) and Endgame (94% RT). Phase 1's The Avengers (91% RT) is close behind. Phase 6's Avengers: Doomsday (December 2026) and Secret Wars (May 2027) are still unreleased.
