🎬 What happens in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)? — Full Plot

⚠️ Heavy spoilers ahead. Forget what you've been told about superhero finales being predictable. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023) is James Gunn's final MCU film — written, directed, and released as he was simultaneously becoming co-CEO of DC Studios. It is also the franchise's most-emotional finale. Heavy spoilers ahead.

We open on Knowhere — the severed Celestial head now serving as the Guardians' headquarters. The crew has been rebuilding after the events of Endgame (2019) and Thor: Love and Thunder. Star-Lord is drinking heavily, mourning the alternate-universe Gamora (who is alive but doesn't remember loving him). Rocket sips coffee while a young Adam Warlock (Will Poulter) — the gold-skinned Celestial weapon engineered by the Sovereign — crashes through the Knowhere atmosphere and beats Rocket nearly to death.

Rocket is brought to medical with severe internal injuries. Nebula attempts to revive him with medical nanotech — but a failsafe inside Rocket's body, embedded by a corporation called Orgocorp, is preventing healing. The Guardians need to obtain the override code. They travel to Orgocorp headquarters. There they uncover Rocket's backstory — pieced together through Rocket's flashback memories.

Rocket was created by the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji) — a megalomaniacal scientist obsessed with engineering perfect biological organisms. As a baby raccoon, Rocket was Subject 89P13. Three friends — Lylla the otter, Teefs the walrus, Floor the rabbit — were experimented on alongside him. They were the only beings Rocket ever loved. The Evolutionary, deciding the experiment had failed, killed all three of Rocket's friends in front of him. Rocket escaped alone, his entire emotional life encoded in that one traumatic moment.

Star-Lord and the Guardians break into the High Evolutionary's mobile space-laboratory — Counter-Earth — to obtain Rocket's override code and confront the man who tortured him. The Evolutionary has been engineering an entire alternate-Earth populated by hybrid animal-humanoids. The Guardians liberate the experimental subjects. The Evolutionary, in fury, destroys his own Counter-Earth to spite them.

The Guardians return Rocket to Knowhere. Adam Warlock joins them. The High Evolutionary, in his final moments, has unleashed his strongest creature — a brutal hyena-hybrid — at the Guardians' home. The final battle takes place on Knowhere's collapsing walkways. Drax and Mantis evacuate the children. Star-Lord disarms a planet-killing weapon at the cost of nearly suffocating in vacuum.

Rocket survives. So do the Guardians — but as a final-stages family, the team breaks up. Peter Quill returns to Earth to find his grandfather. Drax stays on Knowhere to care for the rescued animal-children. Mantis goes off to find herself. Nebula commits to Knowhere as a leader. Adam Warlock joins as a new member. The film closes with Rocket — finally an adult Guardian — leading a redesigned team into a new mission. Cradle to leader.

Guardians Vol. 3 grossed $845 million globally — slightly less than Vol. 2 but a strong finale figure. The film closed James Gunn's Marvel tenure. Within months, he would announce DC Studios' Chapter One slate, including the 2025 Superman reboot. Bradley Cooper's Rocket voice performance has been cited by Gunn as the single most-difficult piece of work on the trilogy. The film remains, for many critics, the most-emotionally-mature MCU finale.
