๐ŸŽฌ Avengers: Endgame โ€” Full Plot

โš ๏ธ Heavy spoilers ahead. The Russo Brothers' 2019 finale closed the Infinity Saga and concluded the arcs of the original Avengers across an unprecedented three-hour runtime. Below is the complete plot, told in our own words. Heavy spoilers throughout for anyone who hasn't yet seen the film.

The film opens days after the events of Infinity War. Clint Barton โ€” Hawkeye โ€” is teaching his daughter archery in the backyard of the family farmhouse while his wife Laura prepares lunch inside. Clint turns away for a moment to call his daughter to come eat. When he turns back, his entire family has dissolved into ash. Cut to deep space, where Tony Stark and Nebula are stranded inside a damaged Guardians of the Galaxy ship. Their oxygen and food are nearly depleted. Tony records a final message to Pepper Potts on his helmet's recorder, expecting to die in orbit. Captain Marvel intercepts their drifting hulk and tows them back to Earth. At the new Avengers compound, the surviving heroes โ€” Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanoff, Bruce Banner, Thor, James Rhodes, Rocket, and the newly-arrived Carol Danvers โ€” track Thanos to a small agricultural planet where he has retired after using the Stones one final time to destroy them. The Avengers ambush him. Thor, in grief and rage, decapitates Thanos with a single swing of Stormbreaker. The Stones are gone. The Snap cannot be undone.

A title card jumps the story forward by five years. The world has settled into a somber post-Snap routine. Steve Rogers leads grief-counseling sessions in a Brooklyn community center. Natasha runs the Avengers from the compound, coordinating survivors across the globe. Tony has retired completely; he lives at a quiet lakeside cabin with Pepper and their five-year-old daughter Morgan. Thor, broken by his failures in Infinity War, has settled into a small Asgardian refugee village in Norway called New Asgard, drinking heavily and gaining significant weight. Bruce Banner has solved his Hulk problem by merging both halves of himself into Smart Hulk โ€” a fully sentient Banner inhabiting the green body. The world goes on, but every survivor is reminded daily of someone they lost. Then Scott Lang, presumed dead since the events of Ant-Man and the Wasp, walks out of a porta-potty in San Francisco. He had been trapped in the Quantum Realm during the Snap. From his perspective, only five hours have passed.

Scott pitches a wild theory to Steve and Natasha: if the Quantum Realm exists outside ordinary time, the Avengers might be able to use it as a kind of time machine, traveling back to retrieve the Infinity Stones before Thanos ever collected them. Steve approaches Tony first. Tony refuses initially โ€” he has too much to lose now, and he cannot risk Morgan's existence on the small chance the science works. That night, alone in his lab, Tony begins running quantum-mechanic simulations and accidentally cracks the math. He cannot ignore what he has just proven possible. He drives to the compound, agrees to help on the condition that no version of the present will be erased, and the team begins assembly. Thor is recruited from New Asgard despite his depression. Clint is found in Japan, having become a vigilante hunting cartel members across continents in his grief. Rocket and Nebula complete the team.

Bruce designs the time-travel suits and the quantum tunnel. Each Stone has been identified across multiple historical points. The team divides into three sub-teams. Tony, Steve, Bruce, and Scott travel to 2012 New York to retrieve the Mind, Time, and Space Stones during the Battle of New York. The mission goes mostly to plan: Bruce convinces a younger Ancient One to surrender the Time Stone, Steve fights his own past self in a stairwell, and Tony retrieves the scepter. But during the chaos, an alternate version of the Tesseract is grabbed by the captive 2012-Loki, who escapes โ€” creating a branching timeline that will be the entire setup for the Loki Disney+ series. Tony and Steve, low on Pym Particles, jump further back to 1970 New Jersey to recover both the Tesseract from S.H.I.E.L.D.'s storage and additional Pym Particles from a young Hank Pym's lab. Tony briefly meets his own father Howard Stark โ€” a quiet, devastating moment of closure for both men.

On Vormir, Clint and Natasha race toward the Soul Stone. Red Skull, still bound to the planet as the Stone's keeper, tells them the price: a soul for a soul. The two best friends fight each other for the right to die first. Natasha wins the fight. She falls. Clint returns home with the Soul Stone, weeping. On Asgard 2013, Thor and Rocket retrieve the Reality Stone (the Aether) from a then-comatose Jane Foster. Thor briefly speaks with his still-alive mother Frigga, who senses he is from the future and counsels him through his grief. He summons Mjolnir from across the room โ€” proving to himself, in a moment of extraordinary catharsis, that he is still worthy. On Morag, Nebula and Rhodes retrieve the Power Stone. But Nebula's neural network synchronizes with her past 2014 self, alerting 2014-Thanos to the entire plan. He captures present-Nebula and dispatches a past version of her to infiltrate the future Avengers compound.

Back in the present, the team reunites with all six Stones. Bruce โ€” the only one whose body can withstand the gamma radiation โ€” fits the Stones into a new Iron Man-built Gauntlet and performs the Snap to undo Thanos's original Snap. He restores everyone the Mad Titan dusted, suffering serious arm damage in the process. The reunion is interrupted instantly: 2014-Thanos arrives via the past-Nebula's compromised quantum tunnel, bringing his entire warship and army into the present. The compound is destroyed in seconds. Tony, Steve, and Thor face Thanos alone in the rubble. Thanos overpowers them one by one. He breaks Thor's hammer with his bare hands. He nearly kills Tony. And then, in the film's most cathartic moment, Steve Rogers โ€” battered, bloodied โ€” picks up Mjolnir from the rubble and channels lightning down on Thanos for the first time. He is, and always was, worthy.

Even Steve's worthiness is not enough. Thanos overwhelms him. From a portal Doctor Strange opens behind Steve, the entire restored MCU pours through: every dusted hero from Wakanda, the Guardians, Asgard, Doctor Strange's sorcerers, the resurrected Wakandan armies, Sam Wilson's voice declaring "on your left" over the radio. The greatest battle in the history of comic-book cinema begins. Wanda Maximoff confronts Thanos and nearly destroys him single-handedly in pure grief. Captain Marvel arrives from deep space and shatters his warship. The Gauntlet passes from Spider-Man to Captain Marvel to a chain of women warriors โ€” a deliberate spotlight moment. Thanos calls for an orbital bombardment of the entire battlefield, willing to destroy himself to take Earth with him. He picks up the Gauntlet personally. The Stones engage. Tony intercepts him. The two men struggle for control of the Gauntlet. Tony, using nanotech, secretly transfers all six Stones from Thanos's grip to his own armor's gauntlet. Thanos snaps โ€” and finds nothing happens. Tony looks up at him. He says he is Iron Man. He snaps. Thanos and his entire army crumble to dust.

Tony Stark dies from the Stones' radiation moments later. Pepper kneels beside him, tells him he can rest now, and watches the arc reactor in his chest go dark. Tony's funeral is held at the lakeside cabin. Heroes from across the MCU attend in silence โ€” every survivor, every restored character, every connection across twenty-two films. Pepper releases the original cave-built arc reactor (kept all these years) onto the lake's surface. Natasha's death on Vormir is mourned separately by the original team. Steve volunteers to return all six Stones to their precise historical points to restore the timelines. He doesn't return through the quantum portal on schedule. Bucky and Sam find an elderly Steve seated on a bench nearby, having chosen to stay in the 1940s and live the life he never had with Peggy Carter. He hands the Captain America shield to Sam Wilson. The Infinity Saga closes with Sam Wilson โ€” a Black soldier from Harlem โ€” accepting the shield.

Avengers: Endgame grossed over $2.798 billion globally, briefly held the title of highest-grossing film of all time (later regained by Avatar's 2021 re-release), and remains the highest-grossing film without a re-release. Critically, it was the rare three-hour finale that audiences uniformly praised; the time-heist structure gave the Russo Brothers room for both spectacle and quiet farewells. The film's effects on the broader MCU are still being unpacked: the Loki branching timeline became Loki and Phase 5's Multiverse Saga; Sam Wilson's shield acceptance led to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Captain America: Brave New World; the dusted-Quill arc became Guardians Vol. 3; and Tony's daughter Morgan's role in Phase 5 has been hinted at but not yet realized. Endgame's three-hour runtime, four narrative acts (the failed first attack, the five-year time skip, the time heist, and the final battle), and emotional throughline made it the most ambitious blockbuster of its era. It remains the moment the Marvel Cinematic Universe peaked โ€” and arguably has not yet fully recovered.
