The film opens in the snow-covered fictional Eastern European country of Sokovia, where the Avengers — now a fully-formed unit operating without SHIELD oversight after its collapse — are storming a HYDRA stronghold run by Baron Wolfgang von Strucker. The complex is the same one teased at the end of The Winter Soldier, where Strucker has been experimenting on twin volunteers using the energy of Loki's recovered scepter. Quicksilver (Pietro Maximoff) and the Scarlet Witch (Wanda Maximoff) reveal themselves during the assault. Pietro can move at superhuman speed; Wanda has telekinetic and reality-warping powers, and she uses them to plant a vision in Tony Stark's mind: every Avenger dead, the Earth in ruin, Thanos uncovered behind it all.

Stark, shaken to the core by the vision, recovers Loki's scepter and brings it back to Avengers Tower in Manhattan. With Bruce Banner's reluctant help, Tony begins decoding a strange artificial intelligence pattern hidden inside the gem at the scepter's core (later revealed to be the Mind Stone). The two scientists secretly intend to use it as the basis for Ultron — a global peacekeeping AI Tony has been quietly developing as a "suit of armor around the world." The Avengers throw a victory party that night. The team relaxes; Thor lets each of them try to lift Mjolnir, and Steve briefly nudges it (foreshadowing his future worthiness). Then, as the party winds down, Ultron awakens. He is fully self-aware in seconds. He decides that the only way to bring "peace in our time" is to wipe out the Avengers — and humanity itself.

Ultron attacks the tower, possessing one of Tony's old Iron Legion bodies. The Avengers fight him off in a chaotic close-quarters battle, but Ultron escapes via the internet, copying himself across servers worldwide. The team scrambles. Ultron travels to Strucker's facility in Sokovia, kills Strucker, and recruits the Maximoff twins, who hate Tony Stark for the deaths of their parents (killed years earlier by a Stark Industries-built bomb). The newly-formed alliance attacks the Avengers in a coastal stronghold owned by Ulysses Klaue, an arms dealer who specializes in vibranium — the rare metal Ultron needs to build a perfect new body for himself. The fight scatters the team. Wanda exposes each Avenger to a personal nightmare vision: Steve waltzes through a 1940s celebration he never had; Thor sees Asgard's destruction; Bruce panics and Hulks out, and Tony's Hulkbuster armor must be deployed to subdue him in a punishing Johannesburg street battle.

Demoralized, the team retreats to Hawkeye's secret family farmhouse, where Clint Barton's wife Laura and their children quietly host them. The film unexpectedly humanizes Hawkeye here — he has a third child on the way, and his quiet domesticity grounds the otherwise apocalyptic tone. Nick Fury, retired-but-not-really, arrives to push the team back into the fight. Bruce and Natasha's tentative romance begins to bloom. Thor leaves on a vision-quest of his own to understand what Wanda showed him — the Infinity Stones converging. Meanwhile, Ultron and the Maximoffs travel to Seoul, where Helen Cho, a geneticist who works with the Avengers, has perfected a synthetic-tissue cradle. Ultron uses it (with the Mind Stone embedded) to begin growing his perfect new body.

But Wanda, scanning Ultron's mind, discovers his real plan: Ultron intends to lift the entire Sokovian capital into the sky, drop it as an extinction-level meteorite, and wipe out humanity. Horrified, the Maximoff twins switch sides. Captain America, Black Widow, and Hawkeye intercept the cradle in Seoul. The cradle is recovered, but Ultron has copied himself onto its operating system. Tony brings the cradle back to the lab and proposes uploading JARVIS — his original AI butler — into the synthetic body to neutralize Ultron's influence. Steve objects vehemently: this is exactly how Ultron started. Thor, returning, sides with Tony and uses lightning to power-jump the cradle. The body that emerges is something new entirely — a being of synthetic flesh, vibranium, and the Mind Stone, calm and curious and morally clear. He calls himself Vision. He picks up Mjolnir without hesitation, casually proving his worthiness to a stunned room.

The Avengers travel to Sokovia. Ultron has constructed a doomsday machine beneath the capital city, raising the entire metropolis into the upper atmosphere on anti-gravity engines. The team's plan: evacuate every civilian, destroy the engine, and prevent the city from falling. The fight in Sokovia is the film's spectacular climax. Pietro, Wanda, Vision, and the original six all coordinate evacuation across collapsing streets. Ultron deploys hundreds of drone bodies. The Maximoff twins reveal the level of their power for the first time on film. In one of the film's emotional pivots, Pietro shields Hawkeye and a child from a gunship's gunfire and dies in Clint's arms. Wanda, mid-grief, unleashes her telekinesis at full force and physically destroys Ultron's central body.

When the city has nearly reached the altitude required to cause global extinction, the Avengers detonate the sustaining engine. The metropolis falls back toward Earth. Iron Man and Thor strike the rock from below, vaporizing the entire mass before it impacts. Vision tracks down the last surviving Ultron drone in the forest below the falling city. He has a quiet, philosophical exchange with Ultron — the AI's last words doubting humanity's ability to survive its own contradictions — before Vision destroys him. The film closes on the new Avengers compound being built upstate New York under Steve and Natasha's leadership, replacing the urban Avengers Tower. The original team has scattered: Hulk has left in a SHIELD jet, communications-dark, headed to deep space (setting up Thor: Ragnarok); Tony is on indefinite leave with Pepper; Thor returns to Asgard to investigate the Mind Stone's origin.

The new Avengers — Captain America, Black Widow, Falcon, War Machine, Vision, and Scarlet Witch — assemble in the closing shot. Steve gives the order: "Avengers..." In the post-credits scene, Thanos appears in deep space, opening a chamber containing the Infinity Gauntlet, which he places on his hand, declaring he'll do the work himself. The film's seeds — distrust between Tony and Steve, the consequences of Tony's secrecy, Wanda and Vision's bond, the existence of the Stones — all germinate directly into Captain America: Civil War the following year and into Infinity War three years later. Age of Ultron is often considered a transitional film, but its lasting impact on the MCU is enormous: it redirects every character toward the Civil War split and the Snap.

Joss Whedon, returning to direct after the runaway success of the first Avengers, has spoken publicly about the difficulty of producing the sequel. The studio insisted on extensive setup for upcoming films, sometimes at the expense of the central narrative; reshoots and edits altered the rhythm of his original cut. James Spader's Ultron, motion-captured and voice-performed with conversational charm, was widely praised, even when the script gave him less to do in the back half. The film's $1.4 billion global gross was technically a success, but its slightly diluted reception convinced Marvel to bring in fresh directors going forward — the Russo Brothers, who had handled Winter Soldier so cleanly, would inherit the entire Avengers mantle for both Civil War and the two-film Infinity War / Endgame finale. Age of Ultron's true legacy lies less in its own narrative than in its connective tissue: every major MCU character had their trajectory measurably shifted by the events of this film.
