The chronological MCU watch order begins with Captain America: The First Avenger (1942), jumps to Captain Marvel (1995), then proceeds through Iron Man (2010) and the rest of the Phase 1–5 catalog in their in-story dates. Below is the complete 35-film viewing order with direct links to each entry's full coverage on our database.
Why chronological order?
The Marvel Cinematic Universe was constructed in release order across nearly two decades, but the in-story timeline sprawls from World War II through the present-day Multiverse Saga. Watching films in chronological order means experiencing the story in the sequence it would unfold for someone living through MCU history — Steve Rogers's wartime serum injection, Carol Danvers's 1990s pilot career, Tony Stark's Afghanistan capture, all in the order they actually happen.
This guide is most useful for repeat viewers who already know the major reveals, or for newcomers who specifically want to experience the story as a continuous historical timeline. For first-time viewers, we generally recommend release order instead — it preserves the surprise of moments like Bucky being revealed as the Winter Soldier, or Carol Danvers connecting back to Nick Fury's pre-Avengers backstory.
If you'd rather see the in-universe story laid out visually with all the multiverse branches and Phase color-coding, head to our interactive MCU Timeline page. The film-by-film list below is the practical companion to that timeline — what to actually press play on, in what order.
Phase 1 — The Foundation (1942–2012)
The first wave of MCU films establishes the original Avengers and the cosmic threats lurking behind them. In chronological order, this phase begins with Captain America's WWII origin, jumps forward to Carol Danvers in 1995, and then proceeds through the first several solo introductions in modern day.
Phase 2 — Cosmic Expansion (2012–2015)
Phase 2 widens the MCU's scope from Earth-bound origin stories to cosmic-scale threats. Iron Man's PTSD arc, the discovery of HYDRA inside SHIELD, and the introduction of the Guardians of the Galaxy reshape the franchise's tonal range.
Phase 3 — Civil War to Endgame (2016–2023)
The most consequential phase in MCU history. The Avengers fracture, Thanos arrives, half of all life in the universe is erased and then restored, and Tony Stark dies. Captain Marvel's chronological position here is debatable — most events occur in 2018, but its 1995 prologue technically belongs at the start of the timeline.
Phase 4 & 5 — The Multiverse Saga
The post-Endgame era introduces multiverse mechanics, expands the cosmic side of the MCU, and lays groundwork for the next major Avengers crossover. Several Phase 4 entries (WandaVision, Loki, Hawkeye) were released as Disney+ series rather than theatrical films and are not included in this list.
What's next in the MCU?
Phase 6 includes the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars (originally announced as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty before Marvel Studios pivoted away from Kang following Jonathan Majors's removal from the franchise in late 2023). Expect a Fantastic Four solo film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and the long-awaited X-Men reboot somewhere in the Phase 6 calendar.
