What happens in Morbius (2022)? — Full Plot
We open in 1990 Greece. Young Michael Morbius — a brilliant scientist with a degenerative blood disease — is being treated at a remote clinic run by Dr. Emil Nicholas. Michael and his fellow patient Lucien (nicknamed Milo) become best friends. Their shared illness creates a lifelong bond.
Cut to: present day. Michael Morbius (Jared Leto) is now a Nobel Prize-nominated hematologist. He has been researching a cure for his disease — and Milo's — for decades. His latest breakthrough: cross-species DNA splicing with vampire bats. Michael injects himself with the experimental serum. He transforms into a vampire-like creature with super-speed, regenerative healing, sonar, and a desperate need for human blood.
Michael initially refuses to kill humans. He survives on synthetic blood. The synthetic blood begins to lose its potency. He begins to crave human blood instead.
Milo, learning about Michael's transformation, breaks into his lab and injects himself with the same serum. Milo, unlike Michael, embraces the vampirism — he begins killing humans publicly. Michael now has a moral dilemma: how to stop his oldest friend who has become a serial killer.
The investigation features FBI agents Stroud and Rodriguez tracking the vampire killings. They suspect Michael but cannot prove it. Meanwhile, Michael's longtime romantic partner Martine Bancroft (Adria Arjona) — also a scientist involved in the research — is killed by Milo in a confrontation. Michael, devastated, commits fully to stopping Milo.
The final battle takes place in a New York subway tunnel. Michael and Milo fight. Michael, with help from the FBI agents (who have realized Milo is the killer), brings down Milo. The film closes with Michael being arrested for the vampire killings Milo committed. The post-credits scene shows Adrian Toomes — the Vulture (Michael Keaton) from Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) — appearing in the SSU after the multiversal events of No Way Home (2021). Toomes proposes Michael join 'a team' — strongly implying the Sinister Six.
Morbius grossed $167 million globally — modest commercial success but well below industry expectations. The film became a cultural meme. The ironic-celebration campaign — particularly around the phrase 'It's Morbin' Time' — produced more lasting cultural impact than the film. Jared Leto has not returned to the role; the Sinister Six setup was abandoned after the Sony Spider-Verse's commercial collapse.
