What happens in Ne Zha (2019)? — Full Plot
We open with a Chinese mythology framing. A cosmic deity has been planning to balance the universe's chi by birthing a Spirit Pearl — a soul-egg containing both light and dark mystical energies. Through ritual error, the egg is fractured: the Light essence becomes a normal newborn baby; the Dark essence is born as a demon child.
Ne Zha — the resulting demon-touched child — is born to a noble Chinese family. From birth, Ne Zha has been demonic-natured: aggressive, destructive, and rebellious. His parents have struggled to control him.
The Light-essence baby — Ao Bing — is born to the Dragon King. Ao Bing has been raised as a noble heir, growing into a calm, disciplined young man.
Ne Zha's parents attempt to lock him away from society to prevent his demonic violence. They build a magical confinement around him. Ne Zha rebels, escapes, and begins terrorizing the local community.
Through gradual character development, Ne Zha discovers his connection to Ao Bing. The two are revealed to be cosmic twins — both born of the same divine source. They form an unlikely friendship.
Ao Bing's father — the Dragon King — has been planning to use Ao Bing's Light-essence to unite the dragon races and establish global supremacy. The plan is forced upon Ao Bing against his will. Ao Bing resists his father's commands.
The final battle features Ne Zha and Ao Bing working together against the Dragon King. Ne Zha sacrifices himself to defeat the cosmic-level threat. The cosmic balance is restored.
