What happens in Ne Zha (2019)? — Full Plot
In ancient Chinese mythology, the Primordial Lord Yuanshi Tianzun (voiced by Yang Wei) is preparing to perform the Heavenly Spirit Pearl ceremony — a divine reincarnation that will produce both a Spirit Pearl (source of heroic potential) and a Demon Pill (source of destruction). The ceremony is disrupted by Shen Gongbao (voiced by Yang Wei in dual role), the Lord's rival who swaps the two pills.
As a result of Shen Gongbao's substitution, Ne Zha (voiced by Lyn) is born as the Demon Pill while the planned hero Ao Bing is born as the Spirit Pearl. Ne Zha's destructive nature manifests immediately at birth; his parents Li Jing (voiced by Chen Hao) and Yin Shi (voiced by Lu Qi) struggle to control his destructive tendencies through parenting.
Despite parental devotion, Ne Zha's destructive nature alienates him from his community. The villagers blame him for various local accidents; he is considered cursed and shunned by children of his age. The isolation provides the franchise's primary emotional anchor; Ne Zha's loneliness drives his gradual moral development.
Ne Zha encounters Ao Bing — the Spirit Pearl now incarnated as a young dragon prince. Despite their opposite mythological natures, Ao Bing and Ne Zha become friends; their friendship provides dramatic weight to the franchise's primary character relationship. The cross-species friendship is notable as one of the franchise's character-development achievements.
The third-act confrontation occurs when Ne Zha's third birthday approaches — the date prophesied for his destruction. Shen Gongbao's manipulation is exposed; Ao Bing is tasked with executing the Heavenly punishment against Ne Zha. The confrontation tests both characters' commitment to their friendship versus their assigned mythological roles.
Ne Zha and Ao Bing combine their powers to defeat the Heavenly punishment. Their combined sacrifice neutralises Shen Gongbao's manipulation; both characters survive but with permanent supernatural alterations. The franchise's primary emotional catharsis is the friendship's preservation against Heavenly mandate.
