What happens in Aquaman (2018)? — Full Plot
We open in 1985. Off the coast of Maine, a lighthouse keeper named Tom Curry rescues an unconscious woman from the rocks. She is Atlanna, Queen of Atlantis (Nicole Kidman), having fled her arranged marriage. Tom and Atlanna fall in love. They have a son: Arthur Curry. Atlantean enforcers eventually track Atlanna home; she returns to Atlantis to spare Tom and Arthur, knowing she's heading to ritual execution for breaking the underwater kingdom's laws.
Cut to: 2018. Arthur Curry — half-Atlantean, half-human, raised on the Maine coast — has been operating informally as a hero called the Aquaman, rescuing sailors from pirates. He intervenes when a Russian submarine is attacked by mercenaries led by David Kane (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II). Arthur kills Kane's father in the firefight. Kane swears revenge.
Princess Mera (Amber Heard) of Atlantis arrives in Maine to recruit Arthur. His half-brother Orm — born to Atlanna and her arranged-marriage king — has been consolidating power across the seven underwater kingdoms and is about to declare war on the surface world. Arthur is the only one who can challenge Orm for the throne under Atlantean law.
Arthur and Mera retrieve the Trident of Atlan — an ancient weapon hidden by Atlantis's founder. The trident is the only weapon capable of legitimizing Arthur's claim to the throne. The quest takes them across the Sahara desert, to ancient Sicilian ruins, and into the Trench — a region of underwater darkness populated by predatory creatures.
Meanwhile, Orm has captured Atlanna years earlier — she is alive, imprisoned in the Trench's deepest region. Arthur and Mera find her. The reunion is the film's emotional centerpiece. Atlanna confirms that she chose to be sent to the Trench rather than die — a decades-long sacrifice to protect her son. The family is reunited.
The climax is a massive underwater battle between Atlantean factions. Arthur arrives wielding the Trident of Atlan, summoning the legendary Karathen — a massive deep-sea creature only the rightful king can command. Karathen, joining Arthur, terrifies Orm's forces. Arthur defeats Orm in single combat. He spares his brother and assumes the throne. He is crowned King of Atlantis.
The film closes with Arthur publicly accepting his identity as Aquaman. His relationship with Mera is established as the franchise's central romantic arc. Black Manta survives the climax — wounded but alive — setting up a future antagonist. Aquaman grossed $1.148 billion globally — the highest-grossing DCEU film. James Wan returned for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023).
